My name is Brittany Markee and I have lived in Mukwonago my entire life. I graduated from Mukwonago HS (class of 08’). I was really big into volleyball during high school. I love to garden, do DIY projects and recently started a non- profit called Brecken’s Blessings, after my son Brecken who passed away this past summer (July 2023) from Congenital Heart Disease (CHD).

About Brittany Markee

Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.

My husband’s name is Blake and we have three children,  Jaxson (7 years old), Mila (19 months old) and our sweet little angel in heaven Brecken (2.5 years old).

Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?

I currently work as an RN at Froedtert taking care of cancer patients and my husband is a partner at a CPA firm. Together, we recently started a non-profit organization called “Brecken’s Blessings” in honor of our son, Brecken. I love helping others and I love how we were able to take our grief losing our son and turn it into something great!

Q: What advice would you give to people?

Be kind to everyone you meet. Our son, Brecken taught us so much about love and kindness. He was so full of life and love in his short 2.5 years of life. He was the happiest child with the most infectious smile and loved everyone and everything in his life. Even though he spent so much time in the hospital, he always made the best out of any situation. He truly was an inspiration to all that knew him.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In 10 years, I want to see our non-profit grow and reach as well as help as many people as possible. I want to educate and empower the congenital heart disease (CHD) world, which happens to be the most common birth defect.

Q: What have you done to make Mukwonago a better place?

The community of Mukwonago has supported and prayed for us when we were at our lowest with our son passing away. We give back whenever and wherever we can. When our son passed away, any money that was given to us from his funeral, we put back into the community by donating to local places. Brecken’s Blessings has a Facebook page, and in the month of January we focused on kindness and paying it forward. We reached thousands of people and heard so many incredible stories of people paying it forward. Rolling Hills also participated in this act of kindness act.

Brittany Markee & Our Community

Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in our community? And what is your favorite thing to order from those restaurants?

DAA- pulled pork sandwich and fork in the road- brisket melt or fish fry.

Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community?

There are so many incredible people in our community. I would have to say one of my former teachers Mrs. Roe. She was an inspiration to the school system. She was an incredible teacher and leader. She truly cared about her students’ success whether that be in the classroom or out driving.

Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about our community?

The elegant farmer. I remember going there all the time growing up for apple picking.

Q: If you could choose anyone that is alive today and not a relative; with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would y’all meet for this lunch?

Honestly, I would want to have lunch with anyone that is kind and has a big heart for helping others. Someone who is a big advocate in the congenital heart disease community.

Q: What is your favorite thing to do in Mukwonago?

Eat at one of the yummy restaurants or go to Home Depot

For Fun

Q: What is one of your favorite movies? TV shows?

Shawshank Redemption, Star Wars, The Sound of Music, and any medical shows. (that wide variety of movies, I know!)

Q: (Even for friends or family), what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?

Hmm, I am not that interesting… My eyes change colors based on the season, sometimes green and sometimes blue. I also like to think I’m handy-ish? I’m not big into fancy clothes or jewelry. You can find me at Home Depot getting things needed for a DIY projects. If I get an idea in my head- I immediately need to do it.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?

Honestly, if I could go anywhere it would probably be Florida to go to Disney with my kids. My son Brecken loved Mickey mouse so much and we had planned to do a Make-A-Wish with him there, but he passed away before we got a chance to take him. We definitely want to go at some point in the future to spread a little bit of his ashes there.

Q: What is your go to band/artist when you can’t decide what to listen to?

I love a wide range of music. I am an 80’s rock and roll girl at heart and also love country and Christian music.

Q: If you had a time machine, what historical event would you want to see?

Maybe like the birth of Jesus.

Q: Do you have any nicknames? What are they and why were they given to you?

Oh boy! Most people call me Britt but in high school the volleyball girls called me B-Mann because my maiden name was Manning.

Q: What are you passionate about?

I am passionate about congenital heart disease (CHD)- something I never knew anything about until my son was diagnosed. I am passionate about my family, my faith and my job as a nurse helping others.

Q: Who would you like to give a shout-out to that contributed to your success?

I am really driven and hard-working. I can thank both of my parents for that!

Q: Favorite month? favorite holiday? and best single day on the calendar?

September is the best, but I might be biased. My husband and I both have  birthdays in September (he is older than me by one day) and it is the month we got married. Fall in general is just the best season. My favorite holiday would probably be Thanksgiving or Christmas.

Q: If you won $10,000,000 what is the first thing you would do?

This is easy… Help others! If our non-profit ever had this type of money we would be able to help so many families with medical expenses, fund so much research for CHD and hopefully be able to live in a world where kids are living longer lives.

Q: What is one or two of your favorite smells?

Definitely fall weather and the smell of burning leaves

Q: Finally, what 3 words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?

God, Family, love & Muk-town
